The Love Agency strongly believes that giving is better than receiving. Our mission is to be always seeking opportunities to give to the less fortunate by throwing electronic dance music fundraising events. This summer we have come together as dj’s, producers, promoters, organizers, fundraisers, artists & dancers and are inviting you to turn your 10, 20, 30+ dollars into something sustainable. “Deep Underground” purpose is to build a drinking water well in a third world country. 1 well = drinking water for 250 people over the duration of 20 years. What we take for granted in the U.S. is actually a luxury in other countries as 85% of the world’s population does not have clean drinking water. 45,000 children die every day from water related diseases. Our event goal is to raise only $5,000 and give it to an organization that builds water wells called charitywater.org.

Analog Music and Burger Bar – San Diego

Coming soon to San Diego in the summer of 2010 is a new idea for a themed restaurant and bar called the Analog San Diego a music and burger bar.  Combine all the things you love about a dive bar and then add some music, design and lot of fun. Only then you’ll fully get the idea of the Analog Bar, good food, strong drinks, music and burgers in San Diego.

The Analog Music and Burger bar will replace Mr Tiki’s Lounge, a long standing restaurant in the Gaslamp district owned by the Cohn Group.

Among things you can do at Analog Music and Burger; grab a burger, sing some karaoke (on steroids) and stick around for DJ’s later in the night. This new concept comes from the same people who brought you the very popular Vin De Syrah.  Michael Soriano, the designer of Vin De Syrah, will be designing Analog Music and Burger Bar in the fashion of a 1970s recording studio. Barfly La Jolla - Nightclub and Sports Bar

Barfly La Jolla is creating new buzz around town. San Diego House Music got a sneak peak inside and is giving you an exclusive look into the newest nightclub in La Jolla.

Today on the corner of Prospect Street and Fay Avenue, two men installed a large sign that reads “Barfly La Jolla.” We are excited as this could mean a revival to the otherwise dull and boring La Jolla nightlife scene.

During the day, Barfly La Jolla will be billed as a sports bar, turning into a nightclub when the sun goes down. When you enter through the front doors of Barfly La Jolla, to the right you’ll see a dance floor outfitted with a state-of-the-art lighting system. In the opposite direction, stands the bar, where HD TVs line the ceiling. The rest of the space is filled with tall bar tables and stools.

For those warm San Diego nights, patrons can relax on the large patio, where couches, fire-pits (for those not so warm nights) and HD TVs will be placed. VIP lounge will be available for private parties.

The DJ booth is worth a second look, its equipped with the new CDVJ 2000, Pioneer 800 mixer, Turntables and Serato.  San Diego DJ‘s will be excited to get on the decks at Barfly La Jolla , especially with the capability to do video mixing and control the lighting system right from the booth.

Last Sunday evening San Diego welcomed Imogen Heap from the United Kingdom to the Humpreys Concert by the bay venue. Those in attendance would see that Imogen Heap dedicated time to localize the concert for San Diego and educate her audience about the music creation process.

There were no opening acts scheduled, instead warm-up sets were performed by members of Imogen Heap’s band, who were introduced by the artist herself. Imogen described to the crowd what she particularity liked about each of the artist’s sound, each of the respected performers played two to three of their own original songs.

With the crowd properly warmed up, and the sun setting over the bay, Imogen Heap walked on stage ready to start the show. In her hands was a tube that she began to swing over her head, making a buzzing sound; added to the buzzing sound was background music and Imogen’s voice. The band consisting of two violins, two guitars (bass and regular) and a drummer, joined Imogen on stage, to the side of the stage sat her mixing technician.

Between songs Imogen Heap took time to introduce the audience to her music, talking about the origin of songs and the creating process.

She pointed to small black objects on her wrists and said, “These are microphones, when I reach out my hand like this, I am sampling something.”

She proceeded to demonstrate just that in her next song, starting with the sampling of the rims of wine glasses being rubbed with water, the same way her last album started. Imogen continued to create the rest of the song on the fly using keyboards, drums, bells and her amazing voice.

Before the show Imogen Heap’s Website had polled San Diego and allowed local fans to vote on their 12 favorite songs to be played at the show.

Imogen said, “Don’t worry I’ll play way more than 12 songs tonight and the rest are my choice!” words that were met with cheers from the crowd.

In the middle of the show, Imogen Heap stated she was going to create a song that would be available for download for $1 from her Website and would support the San Diego Zoo. She proceeded to do a live polling of the audience who shouted that she should make a track in the key of F sharp and the melody should sounds like “bow chika wow wow” (thanks very much to a stoned audience member). Without skipping a beat (which Imogen Heap determined to be a 6/8), she proceeded to create the track. Check out the video to see the track she created, and also go to her website and support the San Diego Zoo by purchasing the song. In this segment the audience really gets to experience the work of a singer/songwriter and see how a song can start as one idea and end up as something totally different.

The best part of her show is that as audience member we learn how Imogen Heap makes her music and we get to participate in the process. We see how she uses echo, looping and sampling to layer her music and how her mixing technician creates the mix live. Her simple dancing and hand movements added more energy to every vocal she sang. The band members contributed without overpowering the beautiful creations of Imogen Heap’s voice.

As one opens Pacific San Diego Magazine, they are introduced to the First Things section, a coverage of local timely stories. A true staple of the magazine is Blind Date, where regular people agree to have their first date recorded and photographed from the awkward start to the ending good night kiss (if everything went well).

The section that mostly intrigues SanDiegoHouseMusic.com is the Groove section that features a local San Diego DJ or producer making waves in the night club scene.  Along with an up-and-coming DJ, the Groove highlights local bartenders and restaurant chefs worth checking out.

Not only is Pacific San Diego Magazine filled with fun and entertaining sections, it’s abundant with glamorous advertisements from some of San Diego’s hippest night clubs, restaurants and nightlife brands.  The design work in the ads captures the imagination of the San Diego party-going demographic.

Sources close to San Diego House Music, say that Pacific San Diego Magazine is currently working on a new website that will be launched mid-2010.  Rumor has it that this new project from Pacific San Diego Magazine will put them in the same league as other local online publications, such as Discover SD, 944 Magazine and City Beat websites.  We guess we will just have to wait and see if those rumors are true.

Mike's La Jolla is starting construction to replace Jack's

Construction has started on the space formerly known as Jack’s La Jolla and will soon become Mike’s La Jolla, a large restaurant and nightclub venue that hopes to bring more business and boost the economy of the the La Jolla night life scene.  Mike’s La Jolla is looking to open its doors October 2010 and the venue hopes to recapture the wide demographic once serviced by Jack’s by offering multiple restaurants and bars with affordable daytime dining and nigh time partying.

Mike’s La Jolla is named after Mike Vicusco, a nightclub mogul who lives in La Jolla. Viscuso of Mike’s La Jolla also owns a few other venues in San Diego and Los Angeles including Belo, Deco’s and OnBroadway.  Mike Viscuso has been in the food and beverage and entertainment industry for more than 30 years.  Mike’s La Jolla has negotiated a 10 year lease for the property and is looking to spend up to $3 million dollars re-inventing the space before opening its doors and in the process creating hundreds of new jobs in the La Jolla area.

Plans for Mike’s La Jolla is to build the venue on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building, with the nightclub being on the top floor. The 1st floor of the complex will be taken by a day spa.  Mike’s La Jolla will include seven bar areas, three restaurants, a street side cafe and the nightclub. Mike’s La Jolla will also have two retractable atriums perfect for having a drink under the sun on those hot summer days. On the nightclub floor the patio sliding doors will remain open during night club hours.

All  eyes are now on Mike’s La Jolla to bring vitality to La Jolla night life scene.  The surrounding businesses will also benefit from the night club opening and bringing  competition to the recently opened BarFly and the hoping to survive Prospect Bar and Lounge.  Even the owners of the clubs in the area can’t deny that the jewel needs more foot traffic to be visiting the nightlife venues in La Jolla.

Eventvibe - Reset SD - Music Festival

The event was headlined by San Francisco artist, Bassnectar who describes his style as ‘omnitempo maximalism’ meaning that he follows no set conventions. The long resume of venues he’s played include Austin City Limits Music Festival, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Rothbury, Burning Man, Bonnaroo, Ultra Music Festival, All Good Music Festival, Diversafest, and Shambhala. His heavy, wobbling bass lines, scratching ability, and excellent sampling kept the crowd jumping for almost two hours. In addition, the video production on the monitor was by far the top video display of the night.

The number two man on the line-up was A-Trak, another high-energy crowd inciter. Based out of New York, he is the first DJ ever to win five World Championships, as well as the first DJ to win the DMC, Vestax, and ITF competitions. His set injected intensity into the crowd that served as a perfect lead up to Bassnectar. A-Trak put on an excellent performance, and was only slightly eclipsed by the headliner.

Flying Lotus, a.k.a. FlyLo followed up Bassnectar, took the third spot on the lineup. You may recognize this Los Angeles DJ’s work from the intermission bumps on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, of which he produces a large chunk. At the beginning he was rocking it, using kung fu-inspired samples reminiscent of Wu-Tang. However as he went deeper into his set, his tracks turned into an ultra-experimental barrage of noise. At this point, my ears couldn’t take it anymore and I left to check out Le Castle Vania.

Atlanta based Le Castle Vania, Toronto natives Hatiras and MC Flipside, BSOD member Steve Duda, 12th Planet, Hot Mouth, Eliot Lip, Peacemaker, and Austin Speed, rounded out the rest of the lineup, leaving ticket holders plenty of options to choose from.

My main criticism of the event had nothing to do with the performances themselves, but involved the poor logistical planning and execution by the ticket office and security protocol of the Sports Arena. I showed up there at 7:00 PM without a ticket on the day of the show that started at 8:00 PM, and found no ticket window open. Leaving then returning at 9:30 PM, I was greeted by a sizable, but bearable line. Little did I know that it would take literally one and a half hours until 11:00 PM to enter the arena. This was due to their attempt to funnel two thousand people into one entrance with only three groups of security personnel taking tickets and performing pat-downs. However, the annoyance quickly faded once I got inside and heard the bass pumping.

Besides the clear lack of entrance planning by the Sports Area, the festival was a huge success. I had a great experience and hope it reoccurs well into the future. The excellent venue and location offered by the Sports Arena grants this event all the opportunity to grow and flourish.

Her favorite artists and DJs include a long list of quality acts such as Kaskade, Victor Dinaire, Cowboy Mike, Scooter and Lavell, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke, and Oakenfold.  Not just an average fan, Kloey is well connected into the local house music and San Diego nightclub scene, counting the owner of Sfinx Productions (Promoters of Friday Nights at the Ivy & Intervention, and the Hard Rock’s Halloween and New Years Parties) among her closet friends.  Her circle of influence delves deep within many fashion, art, and entertainment circles within our city and beyond.

Hot Body Pilates is located on the corner of 6^th and Market Street in the heart of the Gaslamp District.  This high traffic and trendy area of Downtown San Diego provides her with a perfect location with tons of visibility to build upon her inspiring vision of owning studios across the nation and eventually worldwide.  After successfully building Hot Body Pilates for over five years and diligently studying all aspects of the Health and Fitness Industry (with her focus being on “Pilates Based Training Techniques”), she decided to take on carefully handpicked apprentices who are currently working as her understudies in a training program completely designed by the twenty-eight year old dynamo.  The first team of “HBP Certified” Trainers will be graduating in August of this year.  Kloey’s dream of building a large number of highly skilled instructors to continue to build the Hot Body Pilates Brand has just begun and she isn’t stopping there.  An additional three more groups are due to start over the summer!

Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly with the amount of eye-candy roaming about her studio), her client base is over sixty-percent male.  She attributes this to the intensity and cutting edge nature of her Pilates Based Training Techniques and obviously the proof is in the results!  Oftentimes you would think that only males are the clients who are willing to withstand the extreme, yet beneficial, pain that results from her training style and techniques, but I must not fail to mention that I have seen MANY extremely HOT female clients that could give some of us males a run for our money or better yet, maybe we should run to Hot Body Pilates to get a taste of her studio filled with thirteen HOT trainers!  In fact, oftentimes only the fitness elite can hang with her grueling sessions.  This is demonstrated by the long list of Chargers, Padres, PGA Golfers, Triathletes, professional surfers, World Champion martial artists, and Charger cheerleaders, who have enrolled in her challenging programs.

As impressive as these facts are, what is just as impressive to us is her love of electronic music and her willingness to infuse it into her business.  House music dominates the sound pumping through the speakers at Hot Body Pilates, at least when she is in the building.  Anything else immediately gets changed once the boss is there!  Even her new DVD series features house music that she co-produced with Los Angeles producer Rick Stone, owner of DTA Muzik. According to Kloey, Stone is a kick ass producer who she was honored to work with.  He performed excellent work in compiling her soundtrack and comes highly recommended by her.

The girls at SFiNX Pink Night

Rubbing elbows with the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Deadmau5, Dave Dresden, DJ AM, as well as Kayne West, Paris Hilton, and E-40, are Alex Roizen and Omid Sabet, the owners of SFiNX Productions, the team that provides us with many of the premiere electronic music events in San Diego.

Intervention Sundays, Thursday nights at 207 and Fridays at the Ivy are among the events orchestrated by SFiNX on a weekly basis. They also mastermind the yearly Halloween and New Years Eve parties that consume the large percent of square footage at San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel. The smooth and consistent operation of these great local events is the reason that SDHM gives these guys many props. We feel that Intervention and the holiday parties go a long way to raise the bar on our club scene, inching SD closer to the playing fields’ of L.A. and Vegas.

Co-founded with their classmate, Seth Skerritt, Roizen and Sabet have taken SFiNX from an operation first spawned as a system connecting the social scene of UCSD to a full-scale event production company. Rarely using traditional marketing tactics, the pair relies on a vast network of sub-contracted promoters, college students, local fraternity leaders, and club goers to virally spread the word. Roizen and Sabet explain that they aim for the personal touch that face-to-face viral marketing provides over the less personal, print-advertisement approach. By recruiting the some of the most outgoing and popular club goers in the city, they are able to successfully implement this approach.

One of their crowning achievements is their hand in the creation and operation of Intervention Sundays at the Hard Rock. Being one of four major companies collaborating in this major weekly production, they work closely with Andy Hersch, the creator of Hard Rock Las Vegas’ Rehab party and of course, its spinoff, Intervention. Their efforts at Intervention has contributed to the pool party going from a locals’ only performance stage with a budget of $20,000 to a bus stop for International circuit regulars with a budget of $700,000. The funny stories of their challenging interactions with Deadmau5 and the smooth operation of Oakenfold’s show makes me sit here and think about how these guys have one hell of a job.
Roizen and Sabet stay true to their Triton roots by hosting UCSD Grad Night and fully supporting their UCSD Alma Mater. They have lived a very cool story of how organizing a fraternity social network can lead to interacting with world-renowned musicians in a blink of an eye. SDHM would like to thank SFiNX for bringing us these great events and encourage them to continue bringing more. We will be there to cover them!

The headliner, Victor Dinaire, is a New York City based DJ who began his career studying under mentors such as Junior Vasquez.   He mastered the art of coordinating and promoting electronic music events, then showcasing himself to build his name.   Soon thereafter, he found himself performing at New York’s Arc, Spundae LA, Avalon Hollywood, and our own On Broadway San Diego.  He also spent two years as the residing at Blue in Miami.  Victor has shared the stage with all the usual giants like Oakenfold, Tiësto, Paul Van Dyke, Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyond, etc.   This was the first time I have seen him and definitely will check him out again the next chance I get.

San Diego Progressive House DJ and member of Eventvibe, Jason Ross, was the second DJ on the lineup who played a highly energetic, ninety-minute set that had the floor jumping until midnight.  Highlighted by the tracks ‘Abandoned’ by Proff and ‘Teenage Crime’ by Adrian Lux, he performed an excellent leadup and seamless transition into Dinaire’s set.  Inspired by Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto, Sigur Rós, and The Beatles, Jason Ross is a producer and DJ to keep your eyes on.  His career has placed him onstage alongside ATB, Judge Jules, Sander Van Doorn, and Eddie Halliwell.  You can find DJ Jason Ross at Hard Rock’s Intervention on Sunday, June 20^th.   If you miss that show, he will be at Stingaree on July 9^th and 23^rd.

The opening act was rising San Diego DJ, Alan B., a performer who I find spinning at many shows around the city.  I have seen two of his sets in the past month and have been very impressed.  As a Giant resident in San Diego he has played alongside some of the top DJs in the industry such as Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Carl Cox, Armin Van Buuren, James Zabiela, Marcus Shultz, Deep Dish, and Junkie XL.  He has been featured on several radio shows worldwide, and has just begun his production career with Zero Digital. Alan B’s sound can only be described as intelligent electronic dance music that incorporates all genres, adapts to any crowd and holds no limitations.

All in all, it was a great night.  On Broadway is a fantastic venue for house music and there were no weak links in the lineup.  The acoustics in the room could be improved (the main speakers project directly on the dance floor instead of spreading it throughout the entire upper level), but the light show was amazing.  Keep your eyes out for Victor Dinaire, Jason Ross, and Alan B., as well as big names rolling through On Broadway.  You won’t be disappointed!

So you can watch your favorite teams failure, while giving your liver a serious workout and preparing it for the next day’s hangover. To keep up with the best La Jolla tradition, please add extra $5 to the usual price of each drink. Add $3 for a glass of water.

Wait… what am I missing? Oh, the DJ booth. From the looks of it, and giving the geographical location of the establishment, this fine equipment will see solid red lights on its EQ’s and feel the touch of greasy hands of many local hip-hop and Russian pop-music DJ’s and guaranteed to make your ears bleed with sounds coming out of its state-of-the-art sound system. Please work on your fist-pumping technique before you get here.

If you are lucky, a real cat fight could also be witnessed.

About DJ Dan Stark

Dan Stark, Dj/Producer and the Owner of System Events in Cleveland, Ohio has been behind the decks for nearly 6 years now. He has been playing all over the U.S. and Canada at some of the biggest + most respected clubs and also holds a number of Residency’s at places like: Avalon/Bardot in L.A. + also @ Anatomy Ultra Lounge in Cleveland, Ohio. (+ a 3 years @ the House of Blues-Foundation Room in Cleveland). You can also find him about every other month or so in Detroit at places like, Vain Ultra Lounge, or at least twice a year Headlining at Spy Bar in Chicago. Dan was also recently signed to “Harem Records” (Sultan + Ned Shepards Label), for a Remix of “Crimson Sun” by Sultan + Ned Shepard which Features Dirty Vegas on the Vocals and will be released in Mid-June 2010. More recently he was signed to Detroit Based Label, Incorrect Music and also, D.O.N.S. Label, Kingdom Kome Cuts. You can find some more of his released remixes on “Low Pressings”, a well respected underground House Label founded by Peace Division, and currently run by Hernan Cerbello, Chas Burns and Robbie Lowe and is based out of the UK. On top of that, there are many more tracks that are in progress and remixes in the works.

A unique aspect of these events is that they have the ability to expose electronic music lovers to art and vice versa, leading to people developing new interests.

The event is held on varying Tuesdays and avoid running simultaneous to Padres home games. There is no cover at the door and you can usually spot some drink tickets floating around. Bar Basic provides great drink specials, stocked liquor shelves, and a solid lineup of beer on tap. Also, do not forget the amazing pizza they serve up. As seen recently on Viz Cult’s Facebook page, it’s all about Art, Pizza, Beer, and Music, a combination that can never go wrong.

Not only an entertainment outlet for art and music lovers, Visual Culture provides excellent exposure and money-making opportunities for participating DJs and artists. Performing DJs are paid as usual, however they offer a rare incentive for the visual artists. If artists do not sell a piece throughout the course of the night, they are offered a percentage of the revenues, making these Tuesday nights a winning situation for all parties involved.

The next event will be held on Tuesday, June 22 from 7:00 to 11:00 PM at Bar Basic located at 410 10th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. It will feature DJ Scuzzy on the tables and visual artist Will Barton who specializes in portraits of famous musicians. Bring some friends and check it out, you will be greeted by good music, art, drinks, food, and people.

Wednesdays at your job often consist of staring at the clock and wishing for Friday.  Wish no longer, as there is now something to look forward to, Humpnight San Diego.  Held every third Wednesday at the AC Lounge (4673 30th Street, University Heights), the event promoted by Jimmy San Diego draws a diverse and friendly crowd who are down to party.  Fusing quality electronica, art, and fashion, there is no shortage of sounds to hear and visual indulgences to view.  Two-for-one well drinks, free cover before 10:00, and free shots given to guest list members makes this a very affordable mid-week stress reliever.

DJ acts highlighted by Jalen, Kellen Holt, Puppy Kicker, and Biggs/Headshake, fashion shows by Jaq Wear, and dance performances from HoopCharmer & So You Think You Can Dance contestant, Evan Rumble, provided more than enough entertainment to accompany the amazing drink specials.

The main element that struck me was the sociability of everyone I met.  The performers and customers were extremely down to earth and open to random conversation.  The atmosphere in the room was incredibly welcoming.   It is too bad that the vibe in every San Diego nightclub does not stack up to Humpnight.

I recommend all electronic music listeners to make the trek to North Park/University Heights on the third Wednesday of every month to see why this event rocks.

The San Diego House Music team often gets asked how to get on the guest list at night clubs in San Diego,  it’s actually a lot easier than many people may think.   We have outlined a few ways that can get you past the velvet ropes, like a VIP, and at no cost to you.

1.  I’m with the DJ
We’ve all heard the term and some of us have even used it to our advantage.  The DJ is probably your best connection for getting into the night club for free.  The club won’t ask any questions if the DJ puts you on their guest list. Two to three days before you head to the club,  check what DJ is playing at the venue and then visit their social media pages and ask if they can put you on the list, most of the time they are more than happy to do it.

2.  I know people, people know me
Networking with night club event promoters in San Diego is another great way to gain free access to night clubs.  Do your homework and find who is responsible for promoting the event you want to attend, then contact them via Facebook/Twitter or their website.  The promoter’s job is to get people attending their events and since you want to go, it’s a win/win situation.

3.  Go to the source
Contact the club directly from their website or by phone number.  Ask them if they have guest list access and what it would take to get on the list.  Even if you’re not ready to drop $500 on bottle service, they may still give you and your friends free entry to the venue.  On the club’s website you should sign up for any email or SMS newsletter, which also often provide guest list information.

Learn the Rules
In the past, being on the clubs guest list was something to brag about, these days the guest list is a tool to get crowds to the night club early and in masses.   Be sure to learn the terms and read the fine print of being on the guest list.

• Does guest list get you free entry or a discount on cover?
• Does the guest list close at a certain time?
• What is the cover after the guest list closes?
• Is the list valid for a  limited amount of people through the door?  The first 300 for example.

By asking these questions you will be informed when you arrive and may help you avoid any bait and switch tactics if they were used by night club promoters.

Now that we’ve shown you some industry secrets, go out there and get into some clubs for free. Have fun and remember to dance like no one is watching.

Marques Wyatt is a messenger of the deepest, most soulful kind of house music. Beneath his relaxed, spiritual and unknowingly suave persona, therein lies a man partially responsible for giving birth to the West Coast house scene and bringing the fresh sounds of New York to Los Angeles beginning in the mid eighties. Carefully pointing out that he has “always had a deep passion for music,” you know that his adoration of house has become its gateway into the lives of thousands of people. Promoting and playing an enormous amount of parties including BBC, Brass, MAC’s Garage, Does Your Mama Know? and currently Deep, over the years, Marques has changed the face of LA nightclubbing and the presentation of its music and sound.

As the rave scene exploded on the West Coast in the early nineties, Marques sought out and created musical options with a residency at Love in San Francisco and the launch of the Sunday night party Brass as an alternative to both the rave and hip hop scenes. Brass’ five-year stint broke such cutting edge soul and jazz artists like the Brand New Heavies, Digable Planets and Jamiroquai by promoting their first LA shows.

During this time, there was also Max’s on Mondays and Candelabra, the Saturday monthly where Marques first teamed up with Tony Largo, co-promoter of Does Your Mama Know? These events proved to be at the forefront of a new house revival in Los Angeles. In 1994, Marques brought the legendary Louie Vega to his Prague night; Louie reciprocated by bringing Marques to New York to play the opening set in the main room at Sound Factory Bar. This all-important gig was well received by the critical masses of the Big Apple and Marques was regularly invited back to play Sound Factory Bar and Giant Step. Playing the Masters at Work party at the Winter Music Conference in 1996 earned him exposure to an international crop of promoters, opening the door to long awaited international acclaim and world-renowned clubs such as London’s Ministry of Sound.

In America, specifically NYC, Bill Patrick is a man of many accolades… Since his days as a DJ in legendary clubs such as The Limelight, Vinyl & Arc, he has charmed our hearts and moved our bodies. For those who may be scratching their heads wondering, “What the hell is Wet Republic?”, if you’re a seasoned Intervention attendee, you have some idea of what Wet Republic may entail. Please note I did use the phrase “some.”
Wet Republic is MGM Grand’s “ultra pool,” and while I haven’t a clue where the term “ultra pool” originated from, I am damn certain Wet Republic epitomizes the phrase.
At 53,000 square feet, the pool area itself is beyond massive; yet the grandeur of the pool extends well beyond the waterline.
Partygoers can choose to merely bask in the sun and enjoy beats provided by A-list DJ talent such as Too Many DJs, Deadmau5 or Roger Sanchez. More discerning partiers, however, may elect to receive the ultimate in VIP treatment in one of the numerous bungalows located throughout Wet Republic. The bungalows are located on the highest level for a panoramic view of the sophisticated mayhem and offer three private spas, dedicated restrooms, giant flat-screen televisions and even a video game console replete with the latest and greatest game selection and DVD library. And if that weren’t enough, massage treatments are also available. Hmmm… Listening to a DJ the likes of Deadmau5 while drinking with my closest friends with a sea of eye candy spread out before me and enjoying a massage and video games simultaneously? Not to mention, easy access to uncrowded restrooms? Done and done.

Most DJ’s in San Diego are using one of two systems to deliver their music and there is clear split in the preference of equipment between two specific types of DJ: house music and open format. Lets take a closer look why using CD’s and Pioneer CDJ’s is generally better for the house music DJ and why a digital music collection and Rane Serato Scratch Live (Vinyl) is the choice of delivery for the open format DJ.

Open Format DJ - plays more than just one genera of music, usually playing many genres in one set

House Music DJ – plays one specific genre of house, dance or electronic music for all or most of the set

Reasons open format DJ’s use Serato (Vinyl)
Open format disk jockeys must be able to store a large library of music, they play more songs per hour and play each song for shorter amount of time . The open format DJ also needs to be able to switch between tracks faster and sometimes use shortcuts and loops to speed up and aid the mixing process. You can start to see why Rane Serato Scratch Live software is a good choice for the open format DJ. Serato allows for easy organization of massive digital music libraries, fast switching between tracks and shortcuts to speed up the mixing. The vinyl control option of Serato allows the DJ’s to scratch and do turntable tricks just as they would with real vinyl records.

Reasons house music DJ’s use Pioneer CDJ
The house music DJ has less music to organize and sort, he plays his tracks for a longer period of time and performs longer drawn out mixes. This DJ’s primary need is to be able to keep his songs beat matched for as long as possible to create memorable blends and maintain a constant vibe on the dance floor. The house music DJ generally does not scratch or perform any tricky shortcuts while doing the mix. The Pioneer CDJ is a great solution for the house music DJ because it can keep beat matched songs riding together for a lot longer than turntables can.

In conclusion, we have a few reviewed the reasons disk jockeys prefer to use CD Players or Serato to deliver their music. Of course there are exceptions to these rules and we have seen many local house music DJ’s adopt Serato and use it to mix electronic dance music. For example; DJ Frankie M, DJ Misha and John Sautter are all San Diego house music DJ’s who use Serato with vinyl control records.

Next time you are at the night club, take a look at the DJ and notice what kind of equipment the DJ is using, you may be surprised at your observation.

The night ensued with heavy drinking, ridiculous dancing and smoking of cigars.  The music was good (props to DJ Seize), the vibes were positive so we let the good times roll. Most of us were still wearing our wedding gear so it was easy to spot all the people in our party. My girlfriend was wearing a sweet red dress that gave compliments to her irresistible booty.

I’m not sure how I spotted the whole situation, but I remember I saw him, who we’ll call “the Violator,”  coming from a few feet away.   The Violator was moving towards our general direction, he was wearing a tux which made me believe he was in our party, although I did not know him personally.  My girlfriend and I were standing in a tight space, between two tables, where people could just barely squeeze by one another.   I had one arm around my girlfriend, she was facing me and could not see behind her.

So there we were, my girl and I, tight space, the Violator moving closer and that’s when something in my mind clicked.  I thought to myself ‘block the booty!’  Without hesitation I executed my plan – I placed my hand far and wide across her assets.   Just in time too because as the Violator passed by I felt his hand land right on top of mine.  And there we were, practically holding hands right on top of my girlfriend’s ass.   ‘Epic booty defense,’ I thought and the Violator realizing what just happened, looked at me and said something like, “Sorry bro, mad respect.”

I just smiled, laughed, and watched him scurry away with his tail between his legs and his head down to the ground.

What is the value of a booty squeeze?  Later, when the Violator is all alone in his hotel room panning for white gold, will he have gathered enough material that night to drive the skin bus to it’s final destination?

That night my girlfriend had no idea that any of this happened.  We talked about it later and shared some laughs and I was surprised to find how often this actually happens to women at the club. Although I doubt I will ever repeat a similar epic defense of the booty, I will be more aware of sketchy violators attempting to get a hand full of my girl’s ass at the nightclub.

a sign of change to La Jolla nightlife?

In 2009 there was a very expensive failed attempt by Bistro 101 to start up a new night club venue in La Jolla. For starters the owners confused the public and themselves with all the names; Bistro 101, French 101 or Bakery 101.  We still don’t know what to call it.  The public was left wondering are you a nightclub, bakery or a restaurant ?  No one knew.  It didn’t matter to the Russian discotech party thou, they will pretty much bring the party to any venue that lets them.   Bistro 101 = FAIL, enough said.

Now the only real night club venue left in La Jolla is Prospect Bar and Lounge.  Prospect Bar has seen a small increase of business but not as big as originally anticipated with the closing of Jack’s.   Prospect has updated their menu to capture the lunch and dinner crowds and is now booking live music in La Jolla every day of the week.

There is a sign of coming change in the lonely windows of Jacks.  A public notice has been posted for the ownership change of the liquor license.  The property has been purchased by M&N Entertainment, the same group that owns OnBroadway in San Diego’s Gaslamp district.

Perhaps this is precisely what La Jolla needs, a large venue to put the jewel back on the map of San Diego’s night life scene. SanDiegoHouseMusic.com will be watching closely for developments and will keep you informed as we find out more about the future of night life in La Jolla.

The company was founded as a collaborative effort by a team multi-talented artists and entrepreneurs comprised of producers, DJs, visual artists/VJs, and designers all residing in San Diego at the time of its inception.   This group of friends realized that by working together, they would collectively have the tools and skills necessary to operate a dynamic and unique company that was capable of breaking through the underground dance scene.   This would allow them the capability of exposing new artists and new sounds for everyone from the audiophile to those fresh in the scene.

Ironically, Zero Digital is in fact ALL digital.  All tracks, albums, and compilations are available via download only.  It’s pretty apparent why this is necessary in the current music market in order to even be a competitor.  Releases can currently be purchased on some of the top digital outlets such as Juno, DJ Tunes, and Beatport.  In less than a year, Zero Digital has kept a steady schedule with over a dozen album releases featuring original tracks by producers from around the world, several of which have topped the internet charts in their respective categories.

The day started in a dizzy haze brought on by being out on the town till 5am for the last three days. After a much needed meal at a small cafe and running into DJ Collete on the streets of South Beach we began ready to take on the tasks of the day. On the agenda was the Beatport Day party and then an epic ending to our first WMC experience with Sasha performing at the Shelborne “Shine” nightclub.

The Beatport party, a 3 day event with massive sound and visuals, was located on a private beach with an estimated 2000 in attendance each day. Pioneer DJ was on location to showcase the newest technologies emerging on the DJ scene. It’s sad to have to say this, but the reality is that turntables will soon be phased out of nightclubs completely. We are thinking in the next 5 years, but that is a subject to be covered in a future post. Beatport has had a major impact in the paradigm shift of DJ equipment by providing a massive downloadable and affordable electronic collection.

At our arrival M.A.N.D.Y was playing his last tracks and LA Riots were to play next with Cris Lake to follow. La Riots is two guys, but only one played the tracks, the other just stood near for the entire duration of the set. The tracks were big room sound with a lot of that “zipper” noise, overall not our favorite grooves, but the crowd received the breaks and buildups well. Cris Lakes set has a similar sound. We were hoping to hear him play some of his productions but no such luck.

At night we headed to the Shelborn hotel night club to hear DJ Sasha lay down an amazing set playing off his laptop using Abelton.  No one is playing the kind of music you hear in Sasha’s sets and it shows that he truly is a pioneer in dance music.  What an amazing way to end our WMC 2010 experience.  Will be retuning next year for another gathering of dj’s, promoters and all the music people in South Beach, Miami.

About Giom
GIOM was born and raised in Niort, France. He now lives in London where, when he’s not busy touring and recording with various artists as a session drummer, he djs and produces Deep House music. Influenced by Djs such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and DJ Sneak, he released his first track in 2006 on DJ Heather’s Blackcherry Recordings, under a license from OM Records.
