Tortured Soul Review

One of my friends incredulously asked me Saturday before I went out to see Tortured Soul, “So they play House? And they’re a band?”

Indeed, Tortured Soul is a three piece band with John-Christian Urich on drums and vocals, JKriv on bass guitar and backup vocals, and Ethan White on keyboard and backup vocals. There was no Serato, no deejay, and nary a turntable. Rather all the crowd needed was the the Jamiroquia-esque voice of Urich, and some soulful house. On an otherwise rainy, dreary, and morose late February Saturday night, Tortured Soul grabbed their customary white shirts and ties, and put on another excellent show at On Broadway.

After Chris Herrera’s crowd moving, progressive house set, Tortured Soul came in without missing a beat – literally – beat matching what was probably a 131-132 bpm track seamlessly before bringing it down a notch for their second song, the beautiful, Home to you, followed a few tracks later with Enjoy it now. The rest of the set did not disappoint either, as the band made sure all of their fans were happy.

Urich has an amazing stage presence, and the crowd definitely felt his energy. Despite the fact that some of Tortured Soul’s songs are very soulful and not necessarily dance floor anthems, the floor was packed the entire night with enthusiastic fans. Ulrich did overuse the phrase, “How ya feelin’ San Diego,” but nobody seemed to mind. In fact, when looking around the opulent front room of On Broadway, which is a combination of nightclub glitz and geometrical Vegas design, nearly everyone was moving to the beat. This is not always the case, as usually there are guys and girls more worried about hooking up or their latest text message than the band playing.

Although the $20 cover charge, expensive drinks, and $4 coat hanging charge will deter some people from coming out to On Broadway, the professional and friendly staff make it worthwhile when a great band like Tortured Soul is playing. And the go-go dancers aren’t bad either.

So do yourself a favor and check these guys out the next time they come around. In the meantime, you can peruse their website at torturedsoulmusic.com

Analog Music and Burger Bar – San Diego

Coming soon to San Diego is a new idea for a themed restaurant. Combine all the things you love about a dive bar then add some music and design and you get the idea of the Analog Music and Burger Bar in San Diego.

The Analog Music and Burger bar will replace Mr Tiki’s Lounge, a long standing restaurant in the Gaslamp owned by the Cohn Group.

Grab a burger, sing some karaoke and stick around for DJ’s later in the night. This new idea comes from the same pair who brought you Vin De Syrah. Stay tuned for more upcoming news about the Analog Music and Burger Bar coming summer 2010 to the Gaslamp.
